Birth Order: In the Middle
Middle children and in some cases second-borns, often feel “squished in the middle.” They lack the authority of the oldest and the freedom of the youngest. When younger siblings come along, they don’t seem to have the de-throning issues of oldest children. In fact, middle children seem to be more oriented toward a younger brother or sister.
The arrival of the second child produces profound changes in parenting style.
· They take ups and downs of child-rearing more in stride.
· They accept misbehavior as a passing phase.
· They are more apt to bend the rules.
· They are more liberal about such things as bedtime and eating habits.
· They are more tolerant of habits such as thumb sucking.
· They are more relaxed about chores such as toilet training.
This more relaxed parenting style usually affects middle children in several ways.
· They are less concerned about winning approval.
· They tend more to do their own thing.
· They seem more friendly and easy-going than first-borns.
· Over all they seem more comfortable in their own skin.
It is important to devote special attention to middle children, to keep them from feeling lost in the shadow of the oldest and the light of the youngest. If they feel lost in the shuffle, it can result in lowered self-esteem and rebellious behavior.
And you thought you treated all of your children the same? J
